Developments In Russian Painting Since The Fall Of Communism
Communism has been a leading factor in the development of art in Russian history. During the communist regime art was supposed to be dedicated to the proletariat, much like during the dark ages when art was only supposed to be used as a method of praise in Christianity. With the change in politics the history of Russian art changed along with it. It continued with the postmodernist movement, which referred to both the fine arts and literature in modern day Russia.
After the fall of communism in Russia the art world took a completely new turn. This movement became known as Russian postmodernism. This term can be used to identify Russian art and literature in modern times. The previous art movement, Socialist realism, was utilized by the communist government as a method of political manipulation. The new movement showed the artists’ emotional rebellion against the regime’s authority. Art is generally a representation of emotion, ideas, or events, and should never be monitored or controlled.
This movement originally started as part of an underground political movement, and has continued to develop. Just like any other country, the art reflects the political struggles of its citizens, which are connected to the emotional disruptions felt by the artist and the people surrounding them.
